Commissioned Employment

A Deputy Sheriff must be 21 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, a High School graduate or equivalent, a resident of Peoria County (or be willing to relocate within a year of being hired) and be able to pass a series of tests. The tests include:

  • A written test (general aptitude) given by Bradley University
  • A physical ability test (Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report)
  • A background investigation
  • A polygraph
  • Fingerprinting
  • An oral interview
  • A psychological exam
  • A pre-employment medical exam

All the previously mentioned are mandatory. Applicants are on probation for a period of one year. Applicant needs to turn in with the Application a copy of their Birth Certificate and a copy of their High School Diploma or GED. These do not have to be certified copies. If the Applicant was in the U.S. Military, they must submit a copy of their DD214.

Salary & Benefit Information

Starting salary for a Deputy Sheriff is $49,385.69. The Peoria County Sheriff's Office provides health insurance (80/20) at a reasonable cost to the employee, which include medical, dental, and vision, as well as a retirement package.

Salary is determined by union contract.
